I posted this in a CA thread and got crickets in response. I thought it might be enjoyed here..otherwise it's headed for CA Oblivion.
Personally, I think the debate would benefit from people backing away from the religious arguments. After all, not everyone in this country is even religious.
Picture this:
Anti-Gay Zealot: Gay marriage is wrong because God says...
Atheist: I don't believe in God...what else you got?
Anti-Gay Zealot: You don't believe in God? You're goin to...
Atheist: Hell. Yes, I know. Now that we're past that..let's say I'm right and God doesn't exist. Why should we outlaw gay marriage?

Yeah. At first, the imagined exchange was between Beev and an atheist...
That fictional exchange has still not gotten a response! Can't say if Beev or Otw read it, but if they have, they don't seem to know how to respond.
I bumped it a couple times already to taunt them for their silence.

Ah, very good.
Now we have something to bite into. Assuming, of couse, that what you say is accurate.
It would seem to me that gay marriage would reduce at least some of those things.
Marriage indicates a commitment to one person, not promiscuity. A stable, monogomous relationship is not going to have to worry about STDs.
It would be worth looking at why they are depressed, and if they are any more depressed than we are. They might be depressed because of the hostile attitudes. If people wanted to beat me up, kill me, and picket my funeral because I find women attractive, I might be a bit depressed too. I might even find drugs an attractive option...though I'd like to think I'd know better....same with suicide.
Living in a world that is hostile to you sucks. Been there. I can only imagine what it must feel like to live in a world so hostile that it's even lethal.

Nice respomse. Was it beev? Unfortunately with some of those people it won't matter how logical your response, the answer for them is unchanged. That's why I just can't do it right now. But I am glad you went back to fight the good fight.

I made the mistake of reading that thread. Probably didn't need a reminder of what a complete fucking homophobe Riley is. Not that I've ever forgotten his previous hateful disgusting statements about gay families. He's so much nicer to AG than he has been to me about it. Fucker. I really can't deal with that shit anymore. A woman without a man is nothing. And I'm just being emotional if I respond to that of course. As if being told you are nothing is no big deal. Bastard

You're far from being a nothing. Although...those that remember my posting style from when I was on CA before will likely be surprised at my style in that thread. I'm not exactly playing nice with Riley.

Well Riley is being very nice to both you and AG. He's actually trying hard although he doesn't give a shit about JT. And I would piss him off in about 2 seconds if I were to join in. I'm lurking a little but I'm gonna stay out of it. You guys are both great. Who is Dictar. I like his/her posts in that thread.

People don't like gay marriage because "the gays" make them feel all weird and uncertain. Normalizing homosexuality just throws their world into more anarchy. It's fear. It's insecurity. It has nothing to do with immorality or God.

You know... I *REALLY* have to be bored off my face to read the gay marriage threads at CA anymore. It ALWAYS degenerates into a war of scripture this, scripture that, morality defining bullshit and judgemental ignorance, and frankly I'm bored with this shit.
I don't care who sleeps with whom, I don't care who marries whom, it has no effect on me, but I will vote in support of people getting equal rights and treatment under the law because it just makes sense to me period.
And the Beevs and Rileys et al of CA can can kiss my liberal ass while I vote for gay rights, fuck'em.
