I was wondering about this. Here's one answer, and good article on the military too

So far, over one million U.S. military personnel have served in Iraq and Afghanistan

and I have to add a big holy shit, I never got anything like a "Re-enlistment bonuses, depending on specialty, can now reach $100,000" Damn. Even spread out over 6 years that's a lot of money. Even with the taxes they take out first, that's a lot of money. Glad I never had to make that decision.

I guess they have to offer those kinds of incentives today. That seems telling to me. A college education just isn't enough anymore is it?

Actually, they're saying the economy looking up is part of what's hurting recruitment. They generally count on some people joining just for the opportunities, but it isn't happening this time, they said.
