Ex-school aide is fined $500 for hiding evidence in student-restraint incident

A former teacher's aide was found guilty of tampering with evidence and ordered to pay a $500 fine Friday for hiding a cord used to bind the hands of an 8-year-old special education student in a Jefferson County classroom.

However, a jury of nine men and three women found David Singleton, 32, of south St. Louis County, not guilty of a misdemeanor charge of assault for using the cord to restrain the boy.

The incident happened in November 2002 at the Seckman Elementary School in the Fox district.

Singleton, who could have faced up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine on each charge, declined to comment. The boy's family was not present in the Hillsboro courtroom when the verdict was read.

This story makes me wonder - are there details we don't know about? It seems like a pretty lenient (sp?) punishment. He did lose his job, which should be enough I suppose.

I'm all for being lenient on the perpetrators of victimless 'crimes', but the kid in the class seems to be a victim to me. I think the aide should've been convicted of, at least, accessory to the assault. I know if I had a kid that was tied to a chair by a teacher, this verdict wouldn't please me.

I understand that the aide was instructed by the teacher, but if my superior at work instructs me to break the law, I'm still not going to do it. Neither should such a person be held unaccountable for their actions.

I'm not sure but that might be her school. Will have to get the inside scoop. I had a teacher hit Emily once in the 3rd grade. I had to go talk to her. She turned out to be this little ancient old lady. I still told her I'd beat her fucking head in if she ever touched my child again. I know there are people that think schools should have this right, but I don't.

Public schools definitely don't have that right. A private school would, I guess, but I'd never send Connor there.
