False Positive Drug testI will never take a drug test for a job, myself. Although I am clean/sober - I have a paranoia about giving my pee to someone I don't know for a test that has nothing to do with my personal health.

As a nurse, anytime I want to change jobs or get another one I have to drug test. As I am a regular pot smoker, this really sucks. Now i don't really have a problem with drug testing in certain occupations. If they want to test me for narcotics since that is such a huge problem in my profession, I wouldn't mind cuz I don't do them. The problem with pot is that it just stays in your system to long so testing positive doesn't mean I was smoking at work. I don't think that a nurse should be stoned at work and there are plenty of other occupations as well. We only have to test upon hire because the hospital really doesn't want to have to fire 40% of their staff from smokin pot, lol. I've heard of false positives. I know that sudafed will give one for amphetamines. And of course, the poppy seed muffins. We all used to eat them at work every am so that if we got tested, we had witnesses to our poppy seed addiction. lol

I wouldn't so much mind if they were able to test for THC (which would only show positive for an hour or so) instead of the metabolites that stay in your system for weeks. Did you see the Myth Busters episode on the poppy-seed muffins? One guy ate 3 muffins the other guy ate a loaf of poppy-seed bread. They both tested positive for opiates for 12-18 hours after eating. I could hardly believe it.

My biggest gripe. I think alcohol is way more insidious than pot. Way more dangerous. The difference? Alcohol = big business. If a company is going to test for one drug, why not the other? I actually understand intellectually, but not emotionally. Oh I was mistaken. My biggest gripe: If you have a false positive, whose responsibility is it to correct the error? Today, it falls on you. This guy knew it was a false positive, so he has to go through all the grief of getting the lawyer, dishing out the money and going to court for a mistake that wasn't his. Most people, especially younger kids, don't go through all that effort to prove their innocence. So the data regarding reliability gets skewed and very few do anything to correct it. Maybe that is just my own impression though.

I think they do too much drug testing even in pre employment. I can understand why they would test nurses, Drs or even pt. care techs but why test the houskeeping dept. I think it should be limited to jobs where public safety is a factor. Who cares if the person cleaning the bathtub is stoned.
