Reports:[/glow] The group was already settled in their rooms Wednesday when the manager told them they would have to leave, citing a policy of not allowing heterosexuals on the property, Mr. Pirih said.

“He said he had to appeal to the majority and the majority of guests wouldn't want straight people there,” Mr. Pirih said. They were allowed to stay one night but had to check out the next morning.

Key West has a city ordinance that prohibits discrimination by sexual orientation in housing and lodging.

This ordinance is wrong. If they want to make themselves a gay hotel and not let straight people in, that is their business. This is a problem many gay activists don't forsee when they want to ban others from private discrimination. I will admit, though, that not making that policy known when the reservations were made, and then kicking them out when they arrived was horrible customer service.

Probably not, but Outgirl has informed me that the gay/lesbian community in Key West (I've been there - heteros are almost the minority there) have taken Big Ruby's to task for their behavior. While I still think it is Big Ruby's right to refuse service, it is refreshing to see some consistency of principle in the world.

Sometimes it is hard to resist a little payback, isn't it? Of course, the couples involved were obviously cool, if they wanted to stay there with their gay friends.

I agree. I don't care if a straight boy serves me drinks in a dyke bar as long as its served with respect. There shouldn't be any ANYTHING only places. And don't bring up the girl scouts because if a boy is gender identified as a female, then let him join. Most boys wouldn't want to join anyway unless its to cause trouble and there are rules governing behavior for these groups so troublemakers would be quickly kicked out.

Please dont get me wrong though, I laughed at the turn of the tables, but I don't think it's right. It really is no one's business who someone else sleeps with. It seems to me many people who do "different" things never bring it out in the open, not that they should, but it's not like anyone really knows the deep dark secrets of the other.
There's always that aspect of denial too, sometimes those who condemn the most are just throwing up a smoke screen. Sad they would hurt others for having a feeling similar to their own.
