European butchers can no longer give their customers bones for their pets. European Union regulations have declared such bones to be waste that cannot be passed on to the public. However, if customers ask for bones for their own consumption, butchers may provide them. More brickbats: reason.com/brickbats/bb-2004.shtml

Muncie, Indiana, officials have banned campers from displaying Confederate flags at the Prairie Creek Reservoir campground. Displaying a flair for the slippery slope, park board president John Parker defended the ban by saying "Once things like that start, where does it stop? Then it's Miller Lite banners." Courtney Glowczewski has a withered arm and leg due to cerebral palsy. Unfortunately, that has made her a target for harassment by some students at Denver's Martin Luther King Middle School. She's been taunted, threatened and even had a knife pulled on her. But she says the school never responded to her complaints. Finally, after another student set her hair on fire, the school acted. It told Courtney not to come back for the rest of the year. Her alleged attacker is still at school. Administrators confirmed to a local TV station that the boy had a knife, but the school did not call police. More brickbats: reason.com/brickbats/bb-2004.shtml

The mayor of Niamey, the capital of Niger, has asked "qualified" witch doctors to chase away a spirit that has allegedly been harassing people on the street at night. Several people have reported that a woman has been appearing from nowhere, cursing young women who are scantily dressed and disappearing. More brickbats: reason.com/brickbats/bb-2004.shtml

Does anyone read these? I know they don't really warrant a response, but I put them up because they are usually amusing - occassionally frightening. I thought you would enjoy the daily giggle. But I have no idea if anyone is actually reading these. Are you?

Zimbabwe will require Internet service providers to block web sites and e-mail that are "objectionable, obscene, unauthorized" or that violate intellectual property rights or other laws of Zimbabwe. It will also require ISPs to immediately provide data to help track any such content. Last year, police arrested 14 people accused of circulating e-mail calling for "violent demonstrations and strikes to push [President] Robert Mugabe out of office". Is it possible to get too much sunshine in Great Britain? The Derby City Council thinks so. It has warned schools not to schedule field trips during good weather, lest students be exposed to too much sun and develop skin cancer later on. It also recommends that teachers keep a supply on sun screen on hand. But they aren't to rub it on students. That could lead to accusations of inappropriate touching. The Ohio Department of Transportation has told owners of barns visible from federal highways that they must obtain a state permit—-which costs $225 and $125 to renew every other year—-if they have any ads painted on the buildings. Many of the barns have ads for Mail Pouch chewing tobacco which have been maintained for decades. They are tourist attractions that have even been featured in National Geographic magazine. But the state still wants its cut. If it doesn't get it, it will force the owners to paint over the ads. More brickbats: reason.com/brickbats/bb-2004.shtml
