African American Baptist minister Gregory Daniels of Chicago was quoted in the New York Times on March 1st as saying " If the KKK opposes gay marriage, I would ride with them" I post on a hip hop forum that is comprised of mostly kids, many black from around the world and started this thread because I was interested in how young people of color would respond. At first, I was disappointed because many of them did not share my horror at this. I understand that gay marriage is a violation of the laws of the church but can't imagine any circumstances under which an African American minister would ever align himself with the KKK for any reason. However, this thread has become pretty sucessful and has stimulated some real dialogue on the subject of race and sexuality. Most of these kids are between the ages of 14-24 and have preconceived ideas about homosexuality. Faggot is a common insult hurled about on this forum. Anyway, I just wanted to say that it has given me real hope for this next generation. Some of these kids have given very insightful responses. I really feel like I've made a small step here for the cause. While the courts and politicians battle it out in the press, the real battle lies with the kids. They are our future and I feel pretty good about that right now. I just wanted to share this with you. Peace.
