No, you cant stop the music. A little off the subject, but I just had a chat with a miami herald reporter along the same lines. She wrote an article claiming that there were no socially relevant artists in hip hop anymore and then criticized Eminem for only singing about his momma. You know, that pissed me off because everyone is intitled to their opinion, but if you don't know what you're talkin about, shut the fuck up. I had to point out that socially relevant artists are out there, they just get no air play so we dont hear them. It's always been the same. If you didnt want the homogenized crap that was being dispensed on the radio or tv, you had to search out the artists that were making important music. Remember punk! It was all word of mouth. Now hip hop has been completely taken over by the corporate world and all we hear or see is bling bling party songs or videos. Eminem addressed the potential war in Iraq 2yrs ago on the Eminem show. There are plenty of artists out there singing about the struggle and about the real shit but how do we convince the black and corporate radio staions that we want to hear something other than crap like "er'body in the club gettin tipsy" or "what da hook gon be" (sorry Rick I know you like that song) It's like the media wants to dumb us down. I just cant believe that the market cant support both a Murphy Lee and a Royce da 59 ( who's nationally released album wasnt even carried by best buy.) This is a respected artist. I had to order his cd online? Even jay-z has to put out fluff like "change clothes" in order for people to buy his cd to hear his real stuff like "moment of clarity" Maybe you all don't care about any of this. I just felt like ranting a bit. Ok?

Fortunately, the market does support both artists, and those of us that are more discerning in our tastes can find what we are looking for online. Remember how hard it was before the internet to find a rare record? It took me two years to find Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death, which was out of print at the time. The market is amazing in its ability to get a variety of products to a public with such varied tastes. - Rick
