ST. LOUIS -- The offseason lasted about two weeks. It's time to start looking ahead to 2005 for the defending National League champion Cardinals. (That has a nice ring to it, doesn't it, Redbirds fans?)
The Cards' final season at Busch Stadium features a splendid home slate, including visits from the Yankees and World Series champion Red Sox, eight home games each against the Cubs and Astros, and a season-closing home series against Cincinnati.
Opening Day for the Redbirds will come on the road, when they meet in an NL Championship Series rematch against the Astros at Minute Maid Park in Houston. It's a brief, two-game road trip to Texas on April 5-6, followed by the home opener. The last home opener at the current Busch Stadium is set for Friday, April 8, against the Phillies. The final regular-season games at the ballpark are scheduled for Friday-Sunday, Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
Interleague Play matches up the NL Central with the American League East this year, which means some tasty June series at Busch. June 6-8 brings a World Series rematch against Boston, and the weekend of June 10-12 heralds the first Yankees visit to St. Louis since the 1964 World Series. The Cardinals play three Interleague road series: May 20-22 at Kansas City, June 13-15 at Toronto and June 17-19 at Tampa Bay.
Divisional matchups are down to 16 each for the Cards this year, after between 17-19 meetings with NL Central clubs over the past few years. But there's still no shortage of meetings with St. Louis' top rivals. The Cubs make their first visit to Busch for a two-game set Tuesday and Wednesday, April 20-21. Chicago also comes for three games July 22-24 and three from Sept. 5-7, a series that starts on Labor Day. The Cardinals make two four-game visits to Wrigley Field, Aug. 11-14 and Sept. 15-18.
The Astros' first trip to Busch comes right after the Cubs' St. Louis debut, with three games set for April 22-24. Houston comes to town twice more, July 15-17 (immediately after the All-Star break) and Sept. 27-28. The Redbirds play at Minute Maid not only for the opener, but also June 3-5 and Sept. 2-4.
Other home dates of interest include: the first visit of the yet-to-be-named Washington team, May 27-29; a Division Series rematch against the Dodgers from May 9-12; and Barry Bonds and the Giants at Busch from Aug. 19-21. The Cardinals' first trip to D.C. comes Aug. 26-28.
