I sympathize with what you're saying, but the government's job is not to provide for the people, it's to enable the people to provide for themselves. If the government had been doing it's job these last hundred plus years, instead of stealing and misappropriating our money I don't think we'd even be in this situation.
I'm not saying the government's intentions are bad, just that they go about things the wrong way. If you want something done right in this country, it's best to take it out of the hands of government.
Obviously, I see the role of government differently than some of you do. I want the government to regulate big business so that the Cheneys of this country don't completely take over. This administration has done everything to undermine those checks and balences that act in the best interest of the people. Of course I believe that individuals shouldn't rely on the government for everything but how does the common person compete with the corporate upper classes in this country by themselves. They don't. How do we control the toxins in our drinking water without regulations? We have a responsibility to future generations to protect this planet from the sludge that corporate america dumps into our environment. I expect our government to monitor and regulate those companies. I expect our government to attempt to protect and inform it's people not just regarding terrorism but also of any other significant health risk that we face. This administration has had a blatant disregard for environmental issues and look at whats happened. Clearly, when left on their own we can not count on corporate America to "do the right thing" as the libertarian ideology seems to suggest to me.
