The Libertarian candidate for Prince William County (VA) Supervisor has
the opposition so worried that they have resorted to the dirtiest
possible tactic -- accusing the LP and candidate Robert McBride of
supporting legalizing child pornography!
It's not often that a popular retiring incumbent who won with 62% of
the vote in her last contest gives a cross-party endorsement to an LP
candidate. It's equally rare for the Libertarian to have more money in
the bank than either of his major party opponents. But McBride is in
both of those enviable positions.
That's why his opponents have started an underhanded smear campaign. On
October 1, The Potomac News published an opinion piece by Republican
columnist James Young. Young begins his column with praise for McBride,
saying, "I respect him as a man of conscience, consistent principles,
and uncompromising values. I agree with many of them."
But then Young goes on to slander the LP and McBride with the assertion
that our principles support "ending restrictions against the
distribution and possession of child pornography."
You can't get any lower, dirtier, sleazier, or more despicable in
politics than to resort to such an allegation!
Politicians only get so outrageously low when they are truly scared and
desperate. The retiring incumbent's endorsement and McBride's lead in
fundraising have put the campaign in a very competitive position. The
most recent campaign finance disclosure reports show that the
Republican and Democrat candidates have raised little money since the
primary, and that the Republican's campaign is deeply in debt.
The good news is that as of that September 15 report, the McBride
campaign had more cash on hand than either of the other candidates.
The bad news is that McBride's cash in hand is far less than needed to
reach the district's voters with the news of the incumbent's
endorsement, and not anywhere near enough to counter the vicious
negative campaign being waged against Robert. And if either of the
older parties opens up their money machines for this race, McBride's
small fundraising lead could quickly vanish.
Prince William County has a budget of over $1 billion, and a population
of more than 300,000. But McBride's district has only 8,500 "most-
likely" voters for this off-year election. The race can be won with
only 3,000 votes, putting a tax-slashing Libertarian on a billion-
dollar board. The most likely voters have been "lit-dropped" twice
already, once more is planned, and funds are in hand for mailing to the
most likely voters.
Since many of the "most-likely" voters are strongly committed to the
older parties, McBride's campaign is developing critical voter
identification and Get Out the Vote phone programs. They also plan to
expand direct mailings to the next tier of 4,000 likely voters.
If Robert loses now, it will be a signal to other politicians to play
dirty against our other candidates too. To find out how you can help
Robert fight back against these outrageous attacks -- made against not
only his campaign, but against all Libertarians -- please go to:

McBride has been working for years to develop the credentials to run a
winning local race:
Prince William County Budget Committee member.
Prince William Committee of 100.
Prince William Road Bond Advisory Committee member.
Volunteer elementary school teacher.
Volunteer assistant for mental health patients.
Volunteer with church-sponsored food banks and personal
counseling.
McBride is also active in several environmental groups, and his
campaign has just been endorsed by the national group Clean Water
Action for his innovative approaches to community watershed protection.
Robert also helped draft the County Taxpayer's Alliance "No New Taxes
Pledge."
And as a previous two-time LP candidate for public office, Robert's
Libertarian credentials are strong too!
The retiring incumbent said: "Robert McBride will make a great
supervisor, better than any other candidate out there." It took courage
for an incumbent Republican to make a cross-party endorsement for a
Libertarian. And it takes courage every day for Robert to knock on door
after door of voter's homes.
And it takes even more courage now, in face of the Republican's use of
smear tactics.
Robert McBride is standing up for OUR Libertarian convictions. The
opposition must not get away with such dirty politics. Will you back
Robert up in this billion-dollar opportunity?
Our door-to-door survey work shows Robert is the candidate of choice --
once the voters hear his message. But we'll have to work much harder
than the older parties' candidates to overcome their built-in vote
advantage in this partisan race.
