OG, have you see the comic strip 9 Chickweed Lane? The artist Brooke McEldowney seems pretty brave, considering the current climate.
Main characters are Edda (about 18, graduated early from Catholic school and a dancer), Juliette (her mother, divorced and quit her job as a teacher at a college because of what she felt was mistreatment because she was a woman, recently bought a farm), Gran (Juliette's mother, lives with Juliette, going out with Thorax who is odd to say the least), Amos (Edda's love interest, in the city studying/working in the arts), and Solange (Edda's cat). Edda took early graduation to go to the city to study and work in the ballet. She is partnered with Seth and lives with him. Edda got over Seth's good looks early...since Seth really was attracted to Amos more than her. Edda and Amos are on the outs at the moment, although they keep running into each other. Today's strip has Edda talking to Seth's love interest.
Well done, matter of factly handled not for the shock value. And makes for some interesting story dynamics.
McEldowney's other strip is good, too...a lot of sexual innuendo. Pibgorn is a color strip that runs every day but Sunday. With the main characters of a succubus and a fairy, I guess sexual innuendo would be pretty much a given. I loved the line in today's strip. All these fairies flying by and a little girl below says, "Mummy, Daddy, look...nude people. Should I cover my eyes?" The mother replies, "Yes, dear. Thank you." And she has her hand over her husband's eyes.
I had the impression from the strips that McEldowney was Canadian or British. But he was born in West Virginia and now lives in Maine according to his bio.
Thought maybe you'd like a couple of comics to check out.
