Here's a goofy question. What is the definition of hip-hop? I myself am an old-school funk junky. Parliament, Bootsy, Rick James - gimme the bass and I will get down on it, for real. Brick, Gap, Commodores, Brothers Johnson - all my music. I really love all music with a few exceptions that I just can't get into. But I don't know what the borders of hip-hop are. Thx!

Hip hop is the culture, or more accurately subculture of the streets that encompasses various forms of artistic expression including rap, breakdancing and graffiti. It's an attitude that is refected in the fashion and slang of the streets. As hip hop has become more international, the borders are widening. R. Kelly, a pretty traditional R&B singer, sings on Jay Z's and Cam'ron's raps. He's hip hop. Mary J Blige is not a rapper but she's a hip hop queen. Rap is the voice of the streets. Hip hop is the soul.

Dictionary.com said hip hop is:
1.A popular urban youth culture, closely associated with rap music and with the style and fashions of African-American inner-city residents. 2.Rap music.
Mom's definition is better.

Thanks AJ - most people go and it makes me krazee. I love funk, r&b, blues (delta not chicago) - anything with good rhythm, beat and bass. But I got to throw in some heavy metal and alternative too.
